 Merick met Brienne Urdrul during the Midsummer's Ball at the Diirlathe. Centaur and half-elf, a relationship frowned upon by some, and it does have its physical... problems, but it doesn't make the intensity between them any less. In fact, it may be part of the cause.
The pair became lovers, and Merick took Brienne home with him to the Chimerian plains where eventually, he asked her to marry him.
